Our customer operates in the banking and finance industry. It is a boutique bank providing offshore financial services to hedge funds, private equity funds, and investment management companies.
The Challenge
Our customer split from its parent company and was required to migrate workloads, applications and data from hybrid on-prem/cloud infrastructure to a fully cloud-based system, within a very aggressive timeline. Internal teams were not well-versed in cloud technologies, the existing architecture was inefficient, and best practices were not followed. There were limitations, for example, in dealing with simultaneous failures or traffic congestions.
The Solution
Sidero employed an assess, design, build and migrate framework to facilitate the program of work. We took time to understand the existing application landscape, including any interdependencies, infrastructure, user-access, and variables. The design aspect was a consultative approach with the client, taking into account like-for-like testing, budgets, timelines and milestones, future operating models, and available skills and resources.
A fundamental aspect of this part of the engagement was analyzing the most appropriate end-state for each application stack/workload, using the 6 Rs: rehost, re-platform, re-factor, re-purchase, retire or retain. Our consultative approach and subject matter expertise to the project, enabled us to make recommendations that were tailored to the client’s needs.
Once architectural design principles were agreed, we worked with the client to build operating environments for the necessary workloads. Due to the tight timelines involved, the optimal outcome involved re-hosting the majority of the applications, with some re-platforming. Subsequent programs of work will involve optimizing these workloads to take into account cloud-native features.
As this program was delivered out of Ireland for a non-Irish based bank, a North American AWS Region was the preferred hosting environment.
The Result
- Our customer reduced its monthly AWS infrastructure operating costs by 12%, consolidating idle resources
- The solution is enabling the customer to operate its frequently growing workloads reliably without any system downtime or performance issues
- Leveraging the flexibility and scalability of the re-designed platform and re-coded applications is providing a better customer experience and matching the increasing business demand
